Kundalini Awakening Series
What is Kundalini?
Signs, Symptoms, Phenomena, Shaktipat, and the Process
In this series, I share insights into the Kundalini awakening process - the signs, symptoms, overall process, guiding principles and practices, and the goal (Self-Realization).
I also address some of the challenges of the Kundalini process, such as feeling ungrounded, having depersonalization/derealization (DP/DR), emotional purification, releasing fear, working with the chakras, developing a meditation practice, and more.
As well, I join others in conversation about this evolutionary spiritual force that we all have within us.
Kundalini is a Divine spiritual force that lies dormant, coiled up at the base of the spine in most human beings, awaiting to be awakened. Once awakened, the Kundalini begins an evolutionary process of spiritual transformation upon the body-mind-spirit system of the human being. The Kundalini begins to heal and purify the person while it makes its way up the spinal column. Upon the relative completion of this process, the Kundalini finally activates the Crown chakra, allowing the human being to realize their true divine nature as unconditional consciousness or awareness.
Kundalini awakening can be challenging. In this episode, I share some ideas, practices, and principles to rely on to allow for a smooth unfolding. I speak about respecting Kundalini Shakti as the Divine Mother within, surrendering to the process of spiritual transformation, meditation, unconditional loving awareness, and more.
Kundalini awakening can bring a lot of energetic instability to the system. In this part of the Kundalini series, I share some tips to maintain balance across all the chakras to manage adverse symptoms like anxiety, insomnia, depersonalization/derealization (DP/DR), Zen Sickness, or Emptiness Sickness.
Kundalini awakening can occur for a variety of different reasons. Of course, it can happen as a result of direct spiritual practices, meditation, and Yoga. It can also happen as a result of trauma, drug use, prayer and devotion, or even spontaneously. In this part of the Kundalini series, I explore some of the different reasons for why Kundalini might awaken.
In this part of the Kundalini Series, I explore the different types of Kundalini awakening. The process is more sophisticated than simply rising from Root Chakra to Crown Chakra. I also address the difference between an activation and a full awakening.
In this part of the Kundalini Series, I explore the topic of shaktipat - how it's given and how it's received. Shaktipat is the transmission of Shakti, which is the essence of Kundalini. It is the power of the Divine Mother. Through shaktipat, a spiritual seeker can have their own Kundalini activated or even awakened with a full rising. There are some caveats to shaktipat though.
The Kundalini awakening process involves many different experiences and phenomena. In this episode of The Spiritual Awakening Show, I list some of the most common signs of a genuine Kundalini transformation. I dispel the notion that these signs are symptoms of a sickness. Instead, we explore that they are signs of a beautiful transformation of consciousness. Some signs include energetic phenomena along the spinal column and with the Chakras, drastic changes in diet and lifestyle, spontaneous movements (kriyas), and more.
In this section of the Kundalini awakening series, I explore some of the details of what one can expect upon the relative completion of the Kundalini process. I also dispel some common misconceptions about it too.
In part 9, we explore the significance of ego death on the Kundalini awakening journey, while also looking at why it’s not the ultimate aim of the spiritual path. We explore how we can come to see beyond the illusion of separation yet still appreciate it as a useful tool to help us function as human beings in the world.
I sat down with Justina Janda to discuss her Kundalini awakening journey. Justina has been conscious of her Kundalini process since 2017. After an interesting journey, her experience has come to be one of greater inner peace and connection with Self, from which she now serves as a mental health counsellor and spiritual coach. Together, we explore her experience with surrender, meditation, kriyas, and more.
In part 11, I explore how to use discernment when practicing Yoga with teachers at studios. I speak on the origins of Yoga, the original intentions (Kundalini awakening, Self-Realization, Samadhi), and how to develop a deep and genuine practice for yourself. I also speak somewhat irreverently about Ashtanga Yoga (Pattabhi Jois) and Kundalini Yoga (Yogi Bhajan).
In part 12, I address the issue of why some within the spiritual community deny or dismiss the importance of Kundalini Shakti awakening on the journey to Self-Realization with reference to the Neo-Advaita and Non-Duality movement, Mooji, and Sri Ramana Maharshi.
In part 13, I share my thoughts on why some genuine Self-Realized spiritual teachers like Adyashanti, Matt Kahn, and Ram Dass don’t speak very much about Kundalini Shakti awakening, despite having gone through the process themselves. I don’t fault them for not speaking about it. It’s a very polarizing topic and it’s not necessary to speak about it directly at all anyway.
When Lightning Strikes was founded by Katrina Michelle and Kate West with the intention of creating a film all about the Kundalini awakening process. The film is still in the works, but already, a community has formed around it. I sat down with Kate and her partner Gordon, both influential members of the When Lightning Strikes movement, and together we dove deep into their very different awakening journeys. We discussed the unsexy side of Kundalini awakening, entering the flow state, having a relationship with Shakti, and more.
Dreams are significant, especially on the Kundalini awakening journey. In this episode, I discuss healing dreams, learning dreams, mystical encounters with Ascended Masters, shaktipat, samadhi and meditation, and more, all within the context of dreams and Kundalini rising.
I'll be sharing with you all about how you can tap into the creative genius of the universe, which is, of course, powered by Shakti, the Muse, by the Goddess, by the Feminine creative force. I'll be sharing a little bit about how I became inspired to become a photographer after a very significant point in my Kundalini journey. I'll also be sharing a little bit of my photography work.
Jessica Eve and I unpack some of the hurdles and pitfalls of the Neo-Advaita and Non-Duality scene. We explore the significance of Kundalini process, the willingness to heal, connect with our bodies, and to have an emotional connection with the Divine.
Samadhi is a sanskrit term referring to a state of meditation. It can be translated to something like - absorption in consciousness. Samadhi is what we begin to access at the more advanced stages of the spiritual process. There are various levels of samadhi: savikalpa, nirvikalpa, and sahaja. Kundalini Shakti is the energetic force that assists us in meditation and spiritual awakening.
Christian Koncz has over 13 years of experience with Kundalini and an intimate understanding of the process. He humbly shares about his mystical and auspicious journey of awakening involving encounters with the Divine Feminine, readjusting back into the world after a significant spiritual transformation, healing, and more.
Mel Hofmann has over 50 years of experience with the Kundalini process. She began practicing Yoga and meditation at a very young age and has had an intense journey ever since. We explore some of the exciting and challenging parts of her unfolding. Today, Mel serves as an energy healer and artist based in California.
People often ask me, how long does the Kundalini awakening process take? The answer to the question varies from person to person. There are many things to consider when looking forward on our journey, as well as when we look back at things that happened early on in our journey, during our childhood, and also in previous incarnations, if we like that idea.
Some practices, like effortful pranayama, breathwork, visualization, kriyas, and psychedelics shouldn't be engaged once Kundalini Shakti rises within you. Many don't understand this idea and end up overclocking and destabilizing their system unnecessarily because they push too hard with spiritual practices when they no longer need to. Kundalini Shakti has its own intelligence and plan. Once she awakens, you can take a more passive approach to your spiritual practices. This is important to understand, as sometimes, if you put too much effort into manipulating the energy in your body, you will interfere with the Kundalini Shakti process and its natural, organic, spontaneous unfolding.
This section is a bit of a fun one all about the Kundalini symbology that we have all around us, hidden in plain sight. Some of it goes overlooked. We’ll explore the dollar sign, the caduceus, and more.
Today we’re talking all about how to approach the topic of Kundalini awakening within your relationships with friends, family, and loved ones. This is a topic that many people struggle with, understandably so. It’s been a tricky one for me to navigate as well. I’ll be sharing some of my ideas and insights about these dynamics within our relationships and some tips and practices to help you to find balance. Many people approach me with questions along the lines of: How do I speak to the people in my life about what I’m going through with this Kundalini process? They mention that they may have tried in the past, and they were either shut down, ignored, or labelled as crazy. I’ve been there myself.
There are two camps - victims who feel Kundalini is a curse and empowered people who know it is a blessing. In this section, I discuss what I feel is the most significant paradigm shift to ensure a smooth awakening process. Many have sought Kundalini awakening and given up everything for it. It's something to be embraced, not something to run away from.
The Kundalini process can cause your life to fall apart. But eventually, you will be called to be of service in some way. In this episode, I explore how to orient your life around the idea of service and why. I share some practices for putting yourself in the receptive mode to receive direction from the Universe for how you can be of service and more.
Megan Jones, host of the Chasing Spirituality podcast, kindly invited me on her show for a chat about my spiritual journey and work. We explore some meaningful themes relating to Kundalini and spiritual awakening in general.
In this section, I discuss the significance of the Goddess Kali and how we can develop a relationship with her which will support us on our Kundalini awakening journey. I share some auspicious stories of my own relationship with Kali, Anandamayi Ma, and Sri Ramana Maharshi. I close with a beautiful tale by Sri Ramakrishna.
Lila Sterling has over a decade of experience with Kundalini process. Her journey has brought her into deep and intimate relationships with Jesus, Kali, Ganesha, Saraswati, and of course, Kundalini Shakti. As a homeschooling mother of eight children, Lila is a shining example of someone embodying their spirituality in the world, as a householder, with an open heart. Now, she has begun to blossom into a spiritual midwife, supporting others through their rebirth process. Together, we explore themes of devotion, trust, relationship, Neo-Advaita, Rumi, Christianity, Hinduism, midwifery, and more.
Mahesi Caplan has over 30 years of experience with the Kundalini process. Having spent 15 years as a Buddhist monk, his approach to integrating Kundalini awakening is grounded in the structured teachings of Buddhism, which he shares freely with us in this conversation.
Mahesi describes his early experiences of encountering something within himself that was “enormous and high voltage.” Together, we explore Mahesi's awakening story, his time as a monk, relating with others, archetypes, the spiritual support that he offers, and more.
Weed can be used to manage some of the difficulties of Kundalini process, but there is a price. I suggest not using marijuana, if possible, to avoid self-sabotage and hardship. If that's not possible, I offer my insights about using cannabis properly within the context of spiritual awakening.
With humility and openness, Angela describes recognizing her spiritual gifts early on, having multiple near-death experiences (NDEs), mystical encounters with Divine beings, Kundalini Shakti awakening, and more. We discuss topics such as the 'Witch Wound', self-love and acceptance, meditation, channelling, connecting with spirit guides, and more.
The same attitude that you approached puberty with can be applied to Kundalini. The processes are very similar. You didn't trip about puberty. Don't trip about Kundalini awakening, either. Just like how you didn't need to read everything about hormones and do things to facilitate puberty, you don't need to read everything about chakras and nadis or do anything to control Kundalini rising, either.
The Kundalini Shakti awakening process is highly individualized though there are general overarching themes that we see across the board. Some will have a Kundalini rising from the Root Chakra toward the Crown Chakra, others will experience a Descent of Grace from the Crown Chakra downward, for example. There are an infinite amount of mystical phenomena that can be experienced and no two journeys are identical.
Be mindful not to become obsessive and attached to intellectual knowledge about the Kundalini Shakti awakening process. A caterpillar doesn't need to know anything about metamorphosizing into a butterfly. You don't need to obsess over the chakras, nadis, past lives, and all that stuff. Surrender and let the process unfold.
If you think the process is an illness, you will approach it looking for the cure. There is no cure for Kundalini awakening because it is not an illness. There is no cure for puberty either. Kundalini awakening is spiritual puberty - an evolutionary transformation toward Self-Realization.
Tawni has decades of experience with the Kundalini awakening process and the spiritual journey. She shares her deep wisdom with humility and gentleness. Together we explore her journey and relationship with Christ, the rising of Kundalini, the dark night of the soul, the rebirth process, and more.
To me, letting go of the Kundalini Shakti awakening narrative is a sign of maturation and wisdom. This is what it means to integrate and embody your spirituality. A butterfly doesn’t dwell on its time in the cocoon. It just lives as a butterfly now.
I describe the dark, difficult, scary, and uncomfortable parts of my Kundalini awakening process and spiritual journey. I share some of the attitudes and insights that got me through difficult experiences like DP/DR or Zen Sickness, chakra blockages, depression, heartbreak, and more.
I look back at some of the insights that would have been useful for me during the difficult parts of the Kundalini awakening process, such as knowing that it is a real phenomenon, the importance of not comparing my path to others, that the body is important for spiritual development, and more.
Kundalini Shakti awakening can disrupt sleep, causing us to experience insomnia and challenges with getting to sleep. I share some insights for understanding why this is and how to manage it throughout our process.
