This process is 24/7 365. It will affect every moment of your life moving forward, including at night when you sleep.
Insomnia is common, and some things can be done to address it.
It’s important to also understand that sometimes difficulty on this path can’t be resolved with some trick or practice. Sometimes you just need to ride things out.
Ideal conditions for Kundalini awakening - you were prepared with understanding and techniques prior to awakening and then it took place in an environment like an ashram or a monastery with a strict routine, minimal distractions, no screens, etc.
Now many are going through Kundalini awakening without any preparation or understanding, in an environment that is not conducive to this type of spiritual transformation at all.
That’s why nighttime becomes the most ideal time for this process to do its work. It’s the only time that you’re quiet, in solitude, undistracted. So the Kundalini starts working.
So you must try to create better conditions for this process throughout your day so that you can get some sleep at night.
This means taking time to meditate, be quiet, no distractions, and allow this process to work through you during the day.
We become more sensitive so sleep hygiene is really important. Be mindful of screen time, blue light, WiFi signals, the temperature, your routine, etc.
Don’t blame Kundalini awakening for why you can’t sleep when you’re not doing everything you can to optimize your sleep.
The one thing we have to do throughout this process is self-care, in the most basic ways, which means moving, eating in a way that we know works for our body, sleeping well, avoiding consuming things that we know aren’t good for us, etc. You can’t blame Kundalini for your problems if you're not doing all this.
Lack of sleep can lead to serious mental health issues, like mania or psychosis. I think that some people experience these things during Kundalini awakening and blame it on the Kundalini when it’s really a sleep issue that is related to Kundalini, but easily resolved. Of course, this is a deep topic and I’m not a doctor, but something to keep in mind.
When you can’t sleep - meditate or pray, and if that doesn’t bring you relief, ride it out and use it as an opportunity to learn how to surrender and accept.
You can also make deals with the Kundalini Shakti intelligence. It is an intelligent force. You can communicate with it. I know this sounds crazy, but the whole thing sounds crazy so hear me out.
You can talk to it and say look, you won’t let me sleep tonight, I accept that. At least make things easy for me tomorrow at work. And you’ll see, often times this same intelligence, the Shakti, will throw you a bone at work too, maybe things will be slow, or your boss won’t show up to breathe down your neck.
This energy is the infinite intelligence of the Universe waking up within you. It is aware of every aspect of your life and it is compassionate and understanding. You can relate with it just by talking to it.
I’ve experienced lengthy periods of insomnia. At one point, in my late teens, because I was so tired, I wasn’t eating well or exercising, and I said outloud “I’m not taking care of my body” and suddenly I recognized that I was not my body. There was a distinction between I and my body.
And it was incredibly liberating and a significant spiritual awakening. So sometimes we are challenged to provide context for some growth. Maybe we can’t sleep so we can learn acceptance, or we learn how to properly care for ourselves. You must look for the silver linings throughout this process or you will remain disempowered.
Kundalini awakening will sometimes put a lot of energy up into your head, amplifying all of the psychological processes, like thinking. This can make you feel ungrounded and cause insomnia. Become aware of what your body needs to feel grounded and balanced and do those things. I have a completely free ebook and audiobook on my website called The No-Nonsense Grounding Guide that outlines these ideas and practices clearly.
I have suffered greatly from sleepless nights and I understand the difficulty. We must do our part and engage in the self-care practices I mentioned, but then the rest of it, we give it up to the Universe and surrender.
I hope that you all sleep well.
Much love and peace.
